Student’s Perspective of Day 3

So Day 3 has finally rolled around. Like Wednesday this day is referred to as the Bible Camp “Hump Day’ so to speak. Day 3 is probably the second most influential day of bible camp after the last day of camp, which incidentally is famous for overly dramatic goodbyes and tear-smudged mascara. Yet, what makes this day so important? Let’s find out.

- By now, 99.99% of all campers have become proficient in the art of “catching a ride”. Windermere was strategically designed to make campers walk the inhumane distance of a half-mile to get to pretty much anywhere. Their solution is to catch a ride with one of the few counselors that have a car with them. Here’s a shout out to Doug and Jana whose great personalities and vehicular ownership made their popularity with the students soar nearly overnight.

- Today, the students underwent extensive training and have picked up many “special” skills. For our Recreational Time we focused on team building. We can all now juggle in a group while our hands are tied to our neighbors, fold a tarp numerous times while having ten people standing on it, efficiently steer blindfolded friends, etc. Just think of how well these skills will make your child’s resume “pop” and really stand out from the job-seeking crowd. And here you just thought they were going to have fun and get closer to Christ.

- Focus on God. By now, the campers have had a few days to mull over new ideas brought up in worship services. The focus of this camp is “Devotion” and the word has taken on an entirely new meaning for us. Not only are students spending a lot of time hearing the Word and listening to awesome Christian music, a lot of them are leading family group times or at least bring up how God has affected their life recently.

- Golden tans, but mainly lots and lots of sunburns. If yesterday’s Rec Time at the lake didn’t make people nice and crisp, then today’s visit there definitely went a long way. The motto of the week seems to be “What is this Sunblock you speak of?” The campers are still trying to puzzle out how some of the veteran counselor’s such as Nancy and Dale Myers seem to be blissfully unaffected by the “toxic rays of the sun”.

I’m sure there’s a lot more that I could say about the magic that is Bible Camp “Hump Day”, but I bet you get the gist.

First Day

After finding a spot for 99 people and a million pieces of luggage (okay, maybe not that many!) in 2 school buses, 2 minivans and a van/trailer, we hit the road for camp. We had an uneventful trip with a brief stop in Sedalia for a potty break and lunch in Camdenton. Once we arrived at camp, we registered and moved into our rooms for the week. Our first family group time went great. It was neat to hear the level of openness that the groups got to on the first day.

Tonight’s speaker brought a great word from Ephesians 2:10 that reminded the students that they are created in Christ for good works to walk in them therefore their lives should revolve around Christ, not them.

Everyone is tired but doing well! Excited to see what God has for us tomorrow.

I would like to ask you to pray specifically for one of our lady leaders, Jana. She is not feeling well tonight. Pray that God will heal her body. Thanks!

Where: Windermere Conference Center – Lake of the Ozarks, MO

Who: Speaker Adam Robinson and worship leader Chuck Hooten

Why: Camp Theme – Devoted (Deuteronomy 6:5)

“We’re all devoted to something. Just look at where you spend your time, what you talk most about or who consumes your thoughts, and you’ll begin to get a pretty good idea of where your devotion lies. For far too many of us, it doesn’t seem to be with God. So, what does it take to be a fully committed disciple? How do we develop into dedicated and faithful followers of Jesus? Who can we turn to in order to get some help along the way? Join Student Life in the summer of 2011 and discover how you and your students can be DEVOTED.”

As our students and leaders depart for camp this week, we invite you to partner with us in prayer. We ask you to pray for a few things specifically:

- Students’ hearts to be receptive to the Gospel and that their eyes would be opened to the truth of God’s Word

- Stronger relationships with leaders and students

- Fruit from this week would be long-lasting

We are so excited to see what God will do through these next few days at camp. We thank Him for this opportunity and for the laughter, fun, bonding, and, most importantly, growing in Him it will bring! See you next Tuesday!

Reunite – the student’s perspective

If we had to sum up the experience of camp this year in one word, that word would be reunite. Throughout the week God really worked in our hearts to bring us together. Our youth group realized our connection to each other in our shared relationships with Jesus Christ. God revealed to us as a group what the Biblical church really is; people united with one goal of glorifying God. We realized that we are different pieces of the same body of Christ. This revelation transformed the way we view our relationships and interactions with each other.

Students who were formerly distant from each other found common ground in Christ and began to genuinely care for one another simply because God first loved us and therefore we must love others. Tonight back at the motel, we worshipped as a collective body for the first time with the focus on praising God and not on the emotional experience of worship.

As we return to everyday life, we are encouraged by Ecclesiastes 4:12 – “And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.” The strands being believers and the cord being their collective strength, we are much stronger together than we are apart.

We can now be bold in our faith because of God’s promise to protect us from fear. Isaiah 41:10 tells us “fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Counselors view of Wednesday

We would to thank the Allees and the Burgess’ for taking us all out on their boat and jet ski. The students have had a great time on the water. And of course you can’t go to Branson without stopping by the outlet malls so we took a small group of girls and a few guys and did a little shopping yesterday.

PB&J (Pastor Bob and Judy) met us at Golden Coral (quite possibly the largest one in the world) for lunch. All you can eat is always a big hit with the HS guys! PB&J stayed with us for the evening celebration where David Nasser spoke on RELATE. Our theme this week is “RE”. The message really hit home to a lot of students about how we need to RELATE Jesus to our friends at school and work.

We have had an amazing week so far. God is doing some great things in our students lives through our speaker and the worship leader. We have seen lives changed and many decisions made and we know God will continue to work on each of their hearts.

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of seeing God work in your students lives here at Camp! We love them and are so proud of them.

REPENT – A counselor’s view

Each day at Student Life camp has a theme that the small group Bible studies, morning celebrations, and evening worship are centered around. Yesterday’s theme was “Repent,” and was all about the gospel. The small group Bible study passage was Romans 3:21-26 which talks about our need for the righteousness that is through faith in Christ and not through law. It also explains why we need this righteousness that is through Christ. It was so that God would be just in having passed over former sins and the justifier of the one who has faith in Christ. Monday’s theme was respond, and yesterday’s Bible study tied in with Monday’s by stressing the need to respond in repentance as a result of what God has done for us through Christ. Last night, David Nasser gave a clear evangelistic message and stressed the need for us to be “in Christ” and not “in church” or in “good works.” God is clearly working on the hearts of many of our youth. Please pray that God will continue to move in our youth ministry this week.

In addition to the great Bible study and services at camp, we have also had a lot of fun. Yesterday we went tubing and swimming on the lake for several hours. The students seemed to really enjoy the tubing. We will be taking the boys tubing again today because most of them did not get to go yesterday. Yesterday it was mostly the girls who went. Then we will be going to “Silver Dollar City” on Thursday and Friday. Please pray for safety for the rest of the week as we fellowship with one another on the lake, at Silver Dollar City, on the bus, and at the motel.

Formula for great first day of camp

Lambert’s Cafe + Chris Tomlin + David Nasser + Isaiah 6 = Great first day of camp!

This was by far the best first day of camp I have ever been a part of. God is already at work in the hearts of our students. They have come prepared for God to move and it really showed in their RESPONSE to Him tonight.

Praying that our students will walk away from camp this year with less of themselves and more of HIM!
